T & M Engineering personnel regularly inspect
spacecraft, the Space Shuttle Payload Bay and conduct pre-flight
wipe analysis and review potential contamination conflicts between
payloads and make recommendations as a service to NASA. In addition
to providing recommendations on procedures to reduce contamination,
T&M Engineering also provides fall out monitors to measure particle
fall out and molecular deposition during pre-flight operations including
payload integration and shipping. Any number and combination of
active or passive detectors can be placed at various locations on
and/or around the payload during integration, and inside shipping
containers. The passive detectors can then be analysed. Particle
fallout and molecular fall is determined (including molecular species)
and results are reported giving an indication of the cleanliness
as determined by MIL-STD 1246C. Such monitors have recently been
used supporting the SAGE III instrument transportation to Russia.
